Household sewing is much more than just knitting sweaters and mending buttons. There's a lot of science to it. Every task needs a specific needle. To help you pick the right one for the right job, we've put together this little classification:

HOUSEHOLD GENERAL PURPOSE NEEDLES

Universal Needles
Specialty: Light ballpoint makes it versatile for many applications.
Suitability: For most woven fabrics, knits and synthetic.
Size Availability: 70/10, 75/11, 80/12, 90/14, 100/16 and 110/18

Ballpoint Needles
Specialty: Pronounced ballpoint tip prevents piercing and breaking of fibers during sewing.
Suitability: Cotton Knits, interlock, rip knits, fleece, double knits and most knit fabrics.
Size Availability: 70/10, 75/11, 80/12, 80/14, 100/16, and 110/18

Microtex/Sharp Needles
Specialty: Sharp points for perfect straight stitches.
Suitability: Topstitching, edge-stitch application on silk and micro fiber fabrics.
Size Availability: 60/8, 70/10, 80/12 and 90/14

HOUSEHOLD SPECIALTY NEEDLES

Denim Needles
Specialty: Unique spear point that penetrates tight fabrics without pushing the fabric down into the stitch plate hole.
Suitability: For sewing Denims and other densely woven fabrics. Useful for topstitching woven fabrics.
Size Availability: 90/14, 100/16 and 110/18

Stretch Needles
Specialty: As a specially designed scarf which prevents skip stitches. Light ballpoint ensures smooth penetration.
Suitability: Stretch fabrics (containing lycra rubber) used for swimwear and lingerie, for sewing elastic.
Size Availability: 75/11 and 90/14

Leather Needles
Specialty: Specially designed chisel point enables to penetrate hard material.
Suitability: Ideal for sewing of leather and heavy non-woven synthetics.
Size Availability: 80/12, 90/14 and 100/16

Quilting Needles
Specialty: Sharp points ensure easy penetration of layers and formation of straight stitches.
Suitability: For quilting operation where layers of fabrics are sewn together with wadding.
Size Availability: 80/12

Metallica Needles
Specialty: Large eye and groove ensures easy threading and prevents shredding of the delicate metallic threads during stitch formation. Has a light ballpoint tip.
Suitability: Ideal for doing embroidery with metallic threads. Can also be used for cotton and rayon embroidery threads.
Size Availability: 80/12

Embroidery Needles
Specialty: Comparatively larger eye than universal needles and accounts for smooth thread flow while sewing. Light ballpoint to suit most of the material.
Suitability: For embroidery work with rayon and other special threads.
Size Availability: 75/11 and 90/14

Hemstitch/Wing Needles
Specialty: Point needle with wide metal wings on the sides to create large hole in tightly woven fabrics, such as linen and batiste.
Suitability: Used for hemstitching, heirloom embroidery and other decorative stitching.
Size Availability: HEM/100 and HEM/120

Self-threading/Handicap Needle
Specialty: General purpose needle with slip-in threading slot.
Suitability: Ideal for those who have difficulty in threading needles.
Size Availability: 80/12 and 90/14

Twin Needles
Specialty: Constructed with two needles on a crossbar from a single shaft, twin needles sew two rows of stitching at the same time.
Suitability: They are primarily used for heirloom sewing, decorative stitching and anywhere else that may require multiple, uniform stitching rows.
Size Availability: Twin needles come in a variety of types: Twin Denim (Size: 4.0/100), Twin Stretch (Size: 2.5/75 & 4.0/75), Twin Embroidery (Size: 2.0/75 & 3.0/75), Twin Metallic (Size: 2.5/80), Twin Hemstitch and Twin Extra wide (Size: 6.0/100 & 8.0/100)

Triple Needles
Specialty: Constructed with three needles on a crossbar from a single shaft, triple needles sew three rows at the same time.
Suitability: They are usually preferred for decorative stitching.
Size Availability: 2.5 and 3.0
